Jane Sylvestre has been a dietitian for over 25 years, 10 of those specifically dedicated to bariatrics. Currently, Jane works for the Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Care New England in Warwick, RI. Jane is also the Local Event Leader for our 2019 Rhode Island Walk from Obesity, and captain of the current top fundraising team, the “Cast-a-Weighs.”

This is Jane’s Story

“The reason #WhyIWalk is to stay in shape, feel good (physically and emotionally) as well as enjoy some social time. I also walk for my patients. I believe in building community among my patients by coordinating activities to do as a group. Support after weight loss surgery is essential. The bonds built and the friendships that are made at events like the Walk from Obesity provide the support patients need to succeed.

By working with patients who have obesity, I have been able to see the devastation this disease can cause. The consequences of obesity (such as health issues and emotional stress) are motivators for me to stay on the right path and help encourage others. I’m inspired by my patients’ determination and hard work to overcome this disease. Patients overcoming obesity are some of the strongest people I know! I enjoy being able to celebrate their success which makes working in my career worth its weight in gold!

The Walk from Obesity is an inspiring event. For many patients, this will be their first walk ever.  The short distance and the non-competitive atmosphere is perfect for those just starting their journey. I have participated in a Walk from Obesity in the past and the sense of accomplishment at the end was awe inspiring! I am sure this [Rhode Island] walk will be a launch for many road races and active lifestyles ahead.

Obesity is a disease that affects so many. If you do not have obesity, then the person standing next to you probably does. Taking away the stigma from the disease and creating a positive event inspiring people to improve their health and their lives is ingenious!”
