Research has shown that for morbidly obese individuals, sustainable weight loss is very difficult and usually impossible to achieve through traditional diet and exercise methods. This is something that is often difficult for the other family members & friends to understand if they do not have the same struggle with excess weight. If you are seriously thinking about getting professional help for your weight you would benefit from the support of your family and friends.

Sharing plans for weight management services is often a sensitive subject. Some people choose not to say anything to prevent negative comments. I would encourage you to have at least one person in your life that you can talk to and get some support from. If appropriate, include them in the evaluation appointments. Bring them to the information sessions and support group meetings.

As the nurse on the bariatric team one of my roles is teaching the patients and family members about the surgery, the hospital experience, and what are the lifestyle changes and follow up requirements. I am blessed to meet and work with many unique individuals on their journey toward improved health through weight loss.
